Lane map

Index futures

The trader who wants one instrument, deep liquidity, no PDT rule, and micros that let a small account size correctly.

01

What this lane actually is

The facts that decide whether this lane fits your life, before any strategy talk.

Your risk per trade

Whether a normal losing streak is a bruise or a funeral. The single biggest factor, nothing else is close.

Tick value math

MES is $1.25 a tick, ES is $12.50. Same chart, ten times the tuition. The contract you pick is a risk decision.

Session selection

The New York open pays attention; the midday chop collects donations. When you trade matters nearly as much as what.

The daily loss limit

Whether one bad morning stays a bad morning. Judgment degrades after consecutive losses; the limit is the circuit breaker.

02

The right order to start

Skipping a step here is not speed. It is the expensive version of the same lesson.

  1. 01Open a futures broker account and start on micros (MES or MNQ), not minis.
  2. 02Pick ONE setup and journal 50 to 100 sim trades of it inside real session hours.
  3. 03Go live at one micro contract. The only new variable should be emotion, never size.
  4. 04Scale one contract at a time, only after a full month of following the written plan.

03

What it really costs

Every line here comes out of your edge before you make a dollar. Budget all of them.

Tradovate

Commission-plan futures brokerage, browser and mobile first.

Interactive Brokers

Full multi-asset brokerage including futures, for when you outgrow single-venue tools.

TradingView

04

The traps in this lane

Each one is dressed as a shortcut. If someone sells you certainty in this lane, this is what they are selling.

  • Signal groups that call entries in a chatroom you pay for
  • Indicator bundles that promise the setup finds itself
  • "Account managers" who trade your funded account for a split
  • Full-size ES with a four-figure account, no matter what the margin allows

05

The calendar that moves this lane

Scheduled volatility is the kind you can plan around. Flat is a position.

  • FOMC rate decisions

Eight per year, 2pm ET. Indexes reprice in seconds. Flat is a position.

  • CPI releases

Monthly, 8:30am ET. The premarket number that sets the day’s temperament.

  • Nonfarm payrolls

First Friday, 8:30am ET. Violent first minutes, even on indexes.

Setup styles that fit this lane

Archetypes to study, not signals to copy. Ask the mentor about any of them and it will explain the logic, not give you an entry.
